An Emergency Responder Communication Enhancement System (ERCES) ensures that first responders can maintain clear communication inside a building during an emergency. Materials commonly used in modern construction, such as concrete, steel, and low-emissivity glass, can significantly block radio signals, which can compromise safety during critical situations.

ERCES systems are designed with specialized components that work together to enhance signal coverage. These include a donor antenna, bidirectional amplifiers (BDA), a distributed antenna system (DAS), and a battery backup. Together, they boost and repeat public safety radio signals throughout the building. Most fire and building codes, including those from the NFPA and the International Code Council, require these systems to meet specific coverage thresholds in order to ensure effective communication throughout the entire structure.
